1% Or Less for Primary and Secondary Schools 1996 The Center for Science in the Public Interest developed this kit to help you conduct an 1% Or Less campaign in your schools. There are two parts "Getting Started" and "Materials". The first part tells you how to conduct a campaign and the second provides all the materials. Materials help you educate and motivate your students to choose low-fat or fat-free (skim) milk. The kits include a variety of activities for primary and secondary schools to allow you to develop a program that best suits the needs of your school. AUDIENCE: Students Parents Teachers Food Service Personnel Community FORMAT: Lesson plans/campaign materials 5 a Day Power Play: School Idea and Resource Mini-kit 1998 Developed by the California Childrens 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign, the kit features 17 activities that involve schools, families, peers and communities. Activities are presented in a consistent, easy-to-follow format. Ready-to-duplicate activity sheets in both English and Spanish are included for each activity. AUDIENCE: Teachers School Foodservice 4th and 5th Grades FORMAT: Resource book Body Trek: Learning Activities on Health and Nutrition for Upper Elementary and Middle School Students 1998 This kit was developed by the Dairy Council of Utah/Nevada for use with 5th and 6th grade students. The learning activities in the curriculum were developed to support national health standards on anatomy and body systems, disease risk reduction and healthy behaviors. The content is health related, but the actual lessons have been developed as reading, English and science activities. AUDIENCE: Teachers Upper Elementary FORMAT: Lesson Plans Changing the Course: Lower Elementary 1997 The American Cancer Society revised its 1991 version of this curriculum to incorporate the Food Guide Pyramid and 1995 Dietary Guidelines. The goals of the curriculum are aimed at helping students adopt three easy-to-remember eating goals. 1) Choose a low-fat, high-fiber eating style. Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily and six or more servings of whole grains. 2) Be physically active for at least 30 minutes on most days. 3) Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The curriculum is organized into nine classes. The game is played out over a five-week period for 11/2 - 2 hours a week. Each student or "tourist" earns as many points as possible by practicing healthy behaviors. Tourists form teams or "tour groups" and combine points each week. Tour groups also complete two state reports each week to advance along their routes across Healthland USA. AUDIENCE: Elementary FORMAT: Teachers guide/reproducible handouts/game USA map Kids Get Cookin/Chicos A Cocinar 1998 This fun, colorful cookbook was developed by the California Childrens 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign. It features innovative, flavorful fruit and vegetable recipes that are perfect for parents and children to prepare together. All recipes are provided in both English and Spanish. AUDIENCE: Parents Teachers Elementary Child Care FORMAT: 48 page cookbook Lunchtime All Stars: Go for the Gold 1995 The Georgia Department of Education developed this cafeteria-based nutrition education program that teaches about the relationship between eating and the benefits of physical activity. This program is also taken a step further. With a sports nutrition theme, Lunchtime All Stars is geared for school-aged children. If we teach kids now about the benefits of nutritious eating along with activity, it will be with them for a lifetime. The program focuses on carbohydrates fruits, vegetables and grains, fluids and physical activity. The Munchsters Talk About Food 1996 The National Cattlemens Beef Association developed this kit for preschool and kindergarten children. It teaches language arts skills along with health and nutrition information. The kit has been teacher-developed and teacher-tested. AUDIENCE: Preschool Kindergarten FORMAT: Kit with teachers guide/lesson plans/posters Nifty Nutrition with Skill Integration Activities - Kindergarten 1998 Developed by the Arkansas NET Program, this resource provides lessons and skill integration activities that are correlated to the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) 9 Objectives. All skills are identified and specific codes denote the SAT 9 correlates. Nifty provides sequential learning experiences and integrates "hands on" food experiences with language arts, reading and math skills as it teaches nutrition concepts. Experiences encourage children to accept a wide variety of foods and gain a foundation of healthful eating habits. The program is a partnership between the cafeteria and classroom with Child Nutrition providing food for the educational experience. AUDIENCE: Upper Elementary Food Service Personnel Teachers FORMAT: Video and resource materials The OrganWise Guys: How to Be Smart from the Inside Out 1996 Members of the OrganWise Guys club (including Hardy Heart, Madame Muscle, Peri Stolic and the Kidney Brothers) teach the basic ways that our bodies respond to our lifestyles. The book discusses low-fat/high-fiber eating, the need for plenty of water and the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Written by Michelle A. Lombardo. AUDIENCE: Early Elementary FORMAT: Storybook Play Hard, Eat Right: A Parents Guide to Sports Nutrition for Children 1995 This valuable resource answers the questions of parents and coaches about the nutritional needs of exercising children both recreational and competitive athletes between the ages of 6 and 12. Growth, development, body composition, specific nutrient needs of exercising children, ergogenic aids and weight management issues are all discussed. Includes practical issues for child athletes and their parents, such as pregame and postgame eating, fast foods, recipes, menus and snacks. Food frequency charts, food and activity records and a one-day food recall based on the Food Guide Pyramid are provided to encourage the reader to work with a registered dietitian regarding any special concerns. AUDIENCE: Coaches Parents Teachers FORMAT: 166 page book Wilbys Fitness Book 1997 Toni Tickel Branner wrote this book about Wilby, a bright chimp, with his best friend Teddy in tow. Through rhyming prose and silly antics, Wilby shows Teddy how to make his heart healthy, strengthen his muscles, stretch properly, eat a healthy diet and feel good about the way he looks.
