Move to Low-Fat Milk

In January 2015, issuance of non-fat (skim) and low-fat (1%) milk for children age two and older and for women became standard. Low-fat milk has the same amount of calcium, vitamin D, and protein as whole milk, but it is lower in fat and calories. This policy change is consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation of using lower fat dairy products for children age two and older. Medical documentation will continue to be required for a child age two and older or a woman to receive whole milk. (See WIC Medical Documentation; PDF, 250 KB). When a CPA determines there is a need based on an individual nutrition assessment, 2% milk may be issued to child or women participants.
