Switching from compounded tirzepatide to Mounjaro or Zepbound requires a new prescription and sometimes prior authorization if you’re using insurance to pay for it. The price of brand-name tirzepatide is intimidatingly expensive, but there are practical ways to cut costs and make treatment more affordable.

Without Insurance

Step 1:

Check eligibility on Eli Lilly’s site.^[12] You must be 18 or older, live in the US, and have a valid prescription for Zepbound related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea.

People enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, VA, or any government-funded insurance cannot use this program due to federal anti-kickback rules.

Step 2:

You can sign up through LillyDirect for the Self Pay Journey Program, or you can get a prescription through a telehealth partner, like Weight Watchers, that offers this option.

Step 3:

Using the card is as simple as it gets: Just show it at checkout in-person or online. If the discount doesn't go through, you can call Lilly Support Services at 1-800-LillyRx for help.

LillyDirect offers Zepbound vials at a reduced price for the first month, and then the cost stays the same each month after that.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer’s Self-Pay Journey is the most affordable brand-name option for those without insurance, but it’s still far pricier than most compounded versions—and it doesn’t include the added support, coaching, or follow-ups that telehealth clinics often provide.

With Insurance

If you’re lucky enough to have insurance coverage for your GLP-1, the copay can still sting—sometimes over $200 a month. That’s why it’s worth knowing how to bring that number down.
