North Carolina Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, is a time for
communities to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding, to recognize
mothers who provide mother's milk to feed their babies, and to support the
choice of parents to breastfeed their babies, and to strengthen community
networks and practices that help
promote, protect and support breastfeeding.
This year's theme for Breastfeeding Week in North Carolina is "Exclusive
Breastfeeding: the Gold Standard –
Safe, Sound, Sustainable." Breastfeeding
helps babies and their mothers achieve optimal health. The best results
occur with "exclusive breastfeeding," when mothers feed infants
only mother's milk for about six months and then continue mother's milk
with appropriate other foods until the first birthday or beyond.
To recognize community businesses, schools, public places, restaurants,
churches, and health facilities that provide an environment conducive for
mothers to nurse their babies, the N.C. Division of Public Health is
offering a leadership award program. These leaders can be nominated as ‘Mother-Friendly
Businesses that Support Breastfeeding’. More information and the award
nomination application is available on this website or by contacting a
local public health department.

Breastfeeding
In NC: A Public Forum
September 9, 2004
|
|
The North Carolina Division of Public Health (DPH), in collaboration with a Work Group of
representatives from non-governmental and public agencies, announces a public forum on
Promoting, Protecting and Supporting Breastfeeding in North Carolina.
For breastfeeding to be successful, all mothers must have broad support of family, friends,
community, health care providers, insurers, workplaces, and policy makers. Participants
in this
forum will be given the opportunity to dialogue about issues impacting breastfeeding and to
provide input on actions needed to influence the promotion, protection and support of
breastfeeding in North Carolina. This input will be used to develop a Blueprint for Action to
Support Breastfeeding in North Carolina. |
