SUBJECT: National Nutrition Month® - March 2001

This year's National Nutrition Month® (NNM) theme, "Food & Fitness: Build a Healthy Lifestyle" promotes the new Dietary Guidelines. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2000, intended for healthy children ages 2 and older and adults of any age, offer great ideas and sensible guidelines for positive choices. The NNM 2001 campaign reinforces that there are many foods and many ways to build a healthy diet and lifestyle beginning with the "Aim, Build, Choose" foundation of the Dietary Guidelines.

The enclosed materials have been compiled to help with planning your agency's celebration of NNM 2001.

  • Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children: A Daily Guide for 2 to 6 Year Olds
  • Reproducible, user-friendly handouts adapted from USDA materials: The Dietary Guidelines for American 2000 plus the individual ten guidelines:
    • Aim for a healthy weight
    • Be physically active each day
    • Let the Pyramid guide your food choices
    • Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains
    • Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily
    • Keep food safe to eat
    • Choose a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat
    • Choose beverages and foods that limit your intake of sugars
    • Choose and prepare foods with less salt
    • If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation (Note the list of those who should not drink)

We hope you find these materials useful for promoting the messages of this year's NNM campaign to your clients, co-workers and community. The Dietary Guidelines booklet and pamphlet are available to view and download from the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion's website: www.usda.gov/cnpp/. Access this same website for information about and to download the Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children. If you have any questions about these materials, please contact your Regional Nutrition Consultant or Special Nutrition Programs Consultant.
