SUBJECT: Educational Materials

This memo is to inform you of educational materials that child care centers will receive this Spring. These materials were developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for sponsors of child care centers.

Feeding Infants: A Guide for Use in the Child Nutrition Programs: This guide is designed for use by staff who care for and feed infants in facilities that participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This full color guide will present information on infant development, nutrition for babies, safe food handling and food preparation, choking prevention, and the infant meal pattern requirements to help staff meet the challenge of nurturing and feeding babies under their care. The figures in the guide are in "black and white" so that they can be easily reproduced and used as handouts and distributed to child care providers, parents, or others caring for infants.

Building Blocks for Fun and Healthy Meals - A Menu Planner for the Child and Adult Care Food Program: Child care centers can use this colorful publication to learn more about the CACFP meal requirements, find practical advice on how to serve high quality meals and snacks, get menu planning and nutrition education ideas and tips, lean more about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, become aware of the important food safety facts and much more. This menu planner will be contained in a 1" binder and will also have posters that child care centers can use.

If you do not receive a copy of the materials, they can be borrowed from the Nutrition Education and Training Library (NET). We feel that you will find these materials useful as you incorporate nutrition education into your CACFP program. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact your regional Special Nutrition Programs Consultant or me at (919) 715-1926.
