About the Nutrition Services Branch

Activities of the Nutrition Services Branch promote sound nutrition habits among infants, children and women in their child-bearing years. Branch staff work with county, state and private agencies to improve health status by reducing the incidence of nutritional risk factors, improving pregnancy outcomes, and hastening recovery from illness and injury through the provision of technical assistance, education and supplemental foods.

The Branch has five units:

A bullet shaped like apple Administrative Services Unit: The Administrative Services Unit administers all aspects of the Vendor component of the WIC Program including vendor contracting, training, and surveillance. Unit staff members process contracts and budgets for local WIC Programs.
a bullet shaped like a pear Clinical Services Unit: The Clinical Services Unit is responsible for planning and implementing nutrition services provided through the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP); providing leadership in developing nutrition policy, clinical guidance, nutrition education materials, nutrition training and outreach efforts, particularly for women and preschool children; and administering the North Carolina Pediatric and Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance Systems.
A bullet shaped like an apple Information Systems Unit: The Information Systems Unit administers, develops, and operates the WIC Data System. Unit staff members also maintain the data systems for the Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the state funded formula program.
A bullet shaped like an apple Special Nutrition Programs Unit: The Special Nutrition Program Unit administers the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP). As the administering agency, this unit provides training, technical assistance, monitoring, interpretation of federal regulations, audits, and nutrition education. This assistance helps sponsors operate effective CACFPs and SFSPs.
A bullet shaped like an apple Training and Field Services Unit: The Training and Field Services Unit provides consultation and technical assistance to other Women and Children's Health Branches and Divisions, local health departments, public schools, and other public and private community agencies. This unit is also responsible for the Nutrition Education and Training (NET) program and for local agency nutritionist recruitment.
